June / 2020CENERO is a pioneer in energy solutions for Leipzig's CO2 reduction targets - Leipzig serves as a lighthouse city for sustainable energy

Along with Espoo in Finland, Leipzig is a lighthouse city of the EU project SPARCS (Sustainable energy Positive & zero cARbon CommunitieS). With the grant for the European funding programme "HORIZON 2020: Smart Cities and Communities", the city is implementing technically as well as socio-economically sustainable solutions for intelligent and integrated energy concepts. One of Leipzig's goals is to reduce

CO2 emissions by 10% annually.

CENERO Energy GmbH is currently listed with the Spinnerei (former cotton mill) as one of the three Leipzig projects. The cooperation with the Leipzig Housing Office dates back to 2017. As part of the transnational character of the programme, CENERO became one of the leading partners in the application phase and accompanied delegations from the city to Brussels, Dublin and Manchester, among other places, to look at similar projects.

With the Spinnerei, CENERO proves how sustainable energy management can work. "We are rethinking the correlation between electricity and heat. It is always a question of how and where we harmonise generation, for instance with photovoltaics or CHP, as well as waste heat with the energy demand," says Gerrit Baumann, Managing Director of CENERO. At the Baumwollspinnerei, the tenants are now interactively involved in this process. An app installed on tablets in the entrance area of each residential and commercial unit makes the current energy consumption visible and controllable.

CENERO's monitoring concept was the pillar for the City of Leipzig's first application. With this new monitoring system, tenants can benchmark themselves against the average energy demand in the neighbourhood and directly influence their energy consumption. The system is already leading to a more efficient energy budget and will also support savings in the future by comparing annual consumption.

CENERO is now working on the SPARCS project with the city of Leipzig and other partners on a holistically coordinated energy district in the west of Leipzig. By 2023, solutions in information and communication technologies, storage technology and intelligent building control, which will lead to higher energy efficiency in the future, are to be implemented. For CENERO, this is also an opportunity to continue working on the two electric mobility projects: bidirectional and mobile storage systems at the charging stations.
